Between Two Names is a series on The Word by Tanj. The column takes a lighthearted look at two brand names we’ve spotted in the wild. We’ll contemplate, compare and contrast how names work, and what it means for you the next time you name a brand.
Soda is getting a gut-healthy makeover, with prebiotic options bubbling to the top.
Among the frontrunners are Olipop and Poppi, both deliciously fizzy with added benefits.
But in a crowded beverage aisle, does one name stand out over the other, and ahead of all the other (p)options available?
Let's get fizzy with a breakdown.
Spoiler alert — Olipop comes out on top.
A Sip of History
Olipop burst onto the scene in 2018, founded by Ben Goodwin with the goal of creating a unique and healthy take on classic sodas.
Poppi emerged around the same time from husband-wife duo Stephen and Allison Ellsworth, aiming to combine delicious flavors with the gut-boosting power of apple cider vinegar.
Now for the Names: Olipop vs. Poppi
Both brand names speak to the soda pop category in catchy ways. But here’s how Olipop edges out Poppi.
- Standing Out in a Crowd: Olipop is a coined word, instantly differentiating itself from the established soda giants and their sugary associations. Poppi, while cute, sounds similar to "poppyseed," a connection not readily apparent to the product.
- Meaningful Memorability: Olipop's "ol" feels like a throwback — a fun nod to lollipops too, and a familiar flavor profile. Ending in "-pop" gives it modern, playful energy. It's a name that sticks and makes you think "Olipop? What's that?"
- Future-Proofing: Olipop doesn't limit itself by referencing a specific ingredient, or only one category like Poppi. This allows the Olipop name to expand beyond its core product line into new areas or product categories.
The Verdict: Olipop Owns the Fizz
Olipop and Poppi are eerily similar but oh-so different. While Poppi leans towards a familiar, playful, expected sound, Olipop is a spritz more unique, memorable and primed for growth.
There it is. We just got in between two names 🍾
