Pebble is at CES this year sharing some new devices. One of them? The Index 01, a simple ring featuring a button you press to talk to Pebble’s AI, primarily to create reminders for yourself. The ring is intended to be worn on… the index finger.

My initial take on the name? Love love love it. This is an incredibly simple device with an incredibly simple (yet also multi-faceted) name. The immediately obvious meaning ties to its placement on the index finger. (Is the 01 also a reference to the first digit? Or simply a versioning number? We shall see…) And then there’s also the meaning of index as a list of references, or to record things in an index — which works quite nicely for the usage of the ring as a recorder of reminders.

The general concept of this ring is also a sweet nod to the old-fashioned practice of tying a string around your index finger to remind yourself of something important. A name like “Forget-Me-Not” or “String” could have been a cute verbal nod to this practice, but Index 01 is much more practical as it allows for more flexibility if the product ends up being used for more than just reminders.
